How to Enroll in English Classes in Canada: 6 Steps for International Students (2026)
Enrolling in an English course in Canada takes six steps. This guide explains each step in plain language and shows how it works at St. George International College (SGIC), which has campuses in Toronto and Vancouver.
››› 1. Choose an accredited school and a course
Look for accreditation by Languages Canada and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) number. Then pick a course: General English, IELTS or TOEFL preparation, Business English, English for Medicine, or a university pathway.
SGIC: accredited by Languages Canada and open since 1994. DLI numbers: Toronto O212206178197, Vancouver O19352161652.
››› 2. Check whether you need a visa or a study permit
The rule depends on your course length and your passport. In general, a course of 6 months or less does not require a study permit, but you may still need a visitor visa or an eTA. A longer course requires a study permit, and you need an acceptance letter from a DLI to apply. Rules change, so confirm them on the official IRCC website before you apply.
››› 3. Apply and choose a start date
Fill in the school's online application and choose your course and start date. Ask the school how it places new students and when the next intake starts.
SGIC: General English starts every Monday. You can apply online or contact an advisor to confirm your course and dates.
››› 4. Understand the total price and pay
Ask for the full price list: weekly tuition, registration fee, materials and health insurance. Compare the total, not only the weekly price.
SGIC 2026: General English from CA$265 per week for 32 weeks or more, CA$315 per week for 1 to 3 weeks. Registration CA$250. Materials CA$60 per 4 weeks. Health insurance CA$3.50 per day. A 12-week full-time course is about CA$5,170.
››› 5. Receive your acceptance letter
After your application and payment are processed, the school sends a letter of acceptance. You use it for your visa or study permit application, and you should carry a copy when you travel to Canada.
››› 6. Plan your arrival and accommodation
Book your flight after your visa or permit is approved. Many students choose a homestay for the first weeks because it gives daily English practice and a simple start in a new city.
SGIC: homestay is available. On your first day you take an oral and written placement test and start in the right level.
