Study at a Canadian University Without IELTS: SGIC Pathway Program
Many international students want to study at a Canadian college or university but do not have the IELTS or TOEFL score that admission requires. A pathway program is the other route. This guide explains how the University and College Pathway Program (UCPP) at St. George International College (SGIC) works, who can join, how long it takes and what it costs in 2026.

A pathway program is an academic English course that a college or university accepts in place of an English test score. Students who complete SGIC's UCPP can enter SGIC partner universities and colleges in Canada without an IELTS or TOEFL score.
››› Who can join UCPP?
Students who have completed English Level 7 at SGIC, or
Students with IELTS 5.0 or higher, with at least 5.0 in writing. An oral test is required.
Students below this level can start in General English or the Pre-Pathway Program (PPP) and move up.

Academic writing: essays, newspaper articles, research reports and paraphrasing.
Speaking and debate skills.
Analysing readings for hidden meaning and bias.
A practice Cambridge test every second week, so you and your teacher can track your progress.

The full program is 5 terms. One term is 100 hours.
New students can start every Monday.
25 hours per week (40 lessons).
Hybrid learning is available: begin online in your home country and finish in person in Toronto or Vancouver.

SGIC has pathway partnerships with colleges and universities in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. In January 2026 SGIC added four new partners: Humber College, Conestoga College, Trent University and Acadia University. SGIC also helps students with the application process.

Can I really enter a Canadian university without IELTS?
Yes, at SGIC partner institutions. They accept completion of UCPP as proof of English level, so you do not need a separate IELTS or TOEFL score. Each institution still has its own academic admission requirements for the program you choose.
How long does it take?
It depends on your starting level. A student who already has IELTS 5.0 can enter UCPP directly. A student at a lower level studies General English or PPP first.
Can I get a study permit for this program?
Both SGIC campuses are Designated Learning Institutions (Toronto O212206178197, Vancouver O19352161652), so students can apply for a Canadian study permit.
